Synopsis

After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.

Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning.

On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra's family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.

Review

Where to start, Well this book was interesting to say the least. The first few pages got me confused as all I could see where bones and dog bones and a dog coming to life with bones looking like a skeleton? I wasn't sure I was going to get into the book after reading the first few pages but slowly the plot got interesting and the world building started to come together.

The first half of the book was slow with the buildup, but once all the characters where introduced, the plot was made and you read most of the information needed to know what the plot was going to be, it was very enjoyable.

Some original magic in the book was lovely, dust-wives which I've never heard of before, along side the godmother aspects which were slightly different from your usual "cinderella" fairy godmother stereotype.

Overall, I wasn't hooked on this book as much as I'd hoped i'd be and got lost a little with some of the things that was happening in the book, but non the less I wanted to keep reading and see what happens next. Safe to say I was very happy with the outcome of the events and happy with the ending.
